From the instruments played, style or way of playing, the creation of modern music as we know it is thanks to Native Americans. A major aspect of current music greatly affected is the instruments used. All types of Native American instruments have influenced contemporary such as rattles. In today's world, rattles are more popularly known as maracas, which are widely found in south North America. Modern rattles can be constructed with carved wood, cans, plastic bottles, and aluminum salt and pepper shakers. Apache and Yaqui violins influence are evident in current stringed instruments. Guitar-like instruments found in Native American culture shaped the development of 17th century guitars when British immigrated over. In addition, many drums native drums have evolved into modern drums. The technique of hide or membrane stretched over a frame and tightened with some form of string or wire is frequently or always found in modern drums. Snare drums have also copied the idea of adding some contraption to the bottom of a drum to add a buzzing sound when struck.
Another section of contemporary music evolved from Native music is the style and particular sound of genres. The influence in folk, jazz and others are specifically evident. The syncopation and off-beat/off-tune signing and playing has greatly transferred to jazz. Folk music has adopted the free, open style with loud vocals, but a strong background instrumental.
Although Native American music has affected other, more modern genres, native music is still a popular style and has not completely died out in North America. In fact, the Grammy Awards select a Best Native American Music Album annually. This is still a competitive topic where there are many albums trying for the award.
